While Rob Dean was a fully contributing member of Japan on lead guitar, this is probably the band's best album and one that starts to show Sylvian's song writing direction of later albums. It still has the edge and attitude of Adolescent Sex but with more of the craft that would mark Sylvian's total control of Quiet Life and Tin Drum. Personally, I really love this album and consider it one of my favourite albums. Sylvian has commented that it would have been the band's better first album complaining that Adolescent Sex was due to record company pressure to release something. My own opinion but I think the two early albums stand the test of time quite well - each of Japan's albums encapsulates a time in one way or another and shows how quickly music moved in the late 70's and early 80's.
