Trickster were a sincere, energetic pop band when many music fans wanted more energy and rawness. That said, Tricker's debut LP is full of appealing melodies. While the production and songwriting is fairly slick, instrumental licks recall Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The anthem "Goodbye, '65" is catchy and appealing, and nearly all the remaining songs are upbeat and enjoyable.
The problem is, this album came out as punk was starting to crest - and Trickster seems comparatively slick and staid. That said, Tricker's debut is a totally solid example of commercial pop.
