....there is so much interesting music in the world, away from Spotify, away from commercial radio, away from pop, or rock, or r&b. When Dirtmusic found themselves in Mali, many years ago at a desert music festival, they made friends with Tuareg band Tamikrest. Subsequently, when the time came for Dirtmusic to record an album, they returned to Mali, to Bamako, and asked Tamikrest to join them for the recording sessions.
Which explains the album title: BKO is the airways code for Bamako airport, and which explains why this record is such a fascinating blend of off-kilter Western alternative rock and the desert blues of the Tuareg music.
Treat yourself to something else, something new. Add this wonderful album to your collection.
And when you've done that, it will be time to start making your way through Tamikrest's glorious back-catalogue. and then on to endless fascinating adventures with more Tuareg bands like Tinariwen, Bombino, Imarhan and so many more.

"What is Dirt Music? Well thats relatively straightforward. Luther Fox, fish-poacher, lonely hunter, enchanter, shamateur and tragic hero of the modern Australian masterpiece Dirt Music by Tim Winton conveniently drawls out a definition for us: anything you could play on a verandah. You know, without electricity. Dirt music."

That is the paradox. Dirtmusic is anything but straight forward. World music influences resonate through out this group's varied artistry. Especially love the Mid Eastern flavors which meet the west in "Desert Wind"

BKO is a great sampler plate of this artistic myriad. The tracks are different--uneven however the flagship/cornerstone masterpiece song, "Black Gravity" rocks, with certain other tracks to grow on specific tastes. ~ Sota Smith
