This was Bob Dylan's first 'Gospel' Album after his conversion to Christianity. Quite a shock for his family and of course his fans. It actually earned him a whole new fan base in the Christian market too though because it is clear from the Lyrics of the album that his conversion was meaningful and also his lyrics were generally accepted as being sound and true to fundamental interpretations of the Bible.
Musically the album has some great tracks which touch the soul and emotions deeply. It’s a blues album in many ways. This is aided by some awesome guitar work by the amazing Mark Knofer of Dire Straits fame.
Gonna Change my Way of Thinking shows the level to which Dylan had a significant change of mind about Christianity which affected the way he lived out his life.
Slow Train Coming is a great title track and one of the songs used in the West End show Girl from the North Country. There are some hard hitting songs which really make you think – like ‘You Gotta Serve Somebody’. Even the fun track ‘Man gave names’ ends with a thought provoking cliff hanger. ‘When he Returns’ – is going to make lots of people think hard about what inspired to write such deep lyrics.
I think a lot of people criticised this album when it came out. But I loved it from the first listening and have recently revisited it for further review. Not disappointed in the slightest! Enjoy!
