Black Sabbath's 3rd release 1971's MASTER OF REALITY.
This is the album where it all came together for Sabbath, the writing,
the perfomances and the prodution all were focused and fresh.
This along with 72's VOLUME 4 is the pinicle of Black Sabbath's song writing and creativity. The real star of the show here is Tony Iommi
whose riffs and lead playing out shine his past and who truely earns the often spoken praises as the originator of the all-mighty Heavy Metal guitar style.
The disc opens with Iommi's coughing that segues into bludgeoning
mid-tempo guitar glory fully supported by the underrated Geezer Butler on Bass (and lyric writing) along with the huge swinging hammer of Bill Wards drums.
"Sweet Leaf" is an unrepentant love song to marijuana and one of the greatest riffs ever commited to vinyl.
The album also contains the anti-war "Children of the Grave" one of Sabbaths best, and a song that has been played at every Sabbath gig
since (as well as many of Ozzy's solo concerts).
The record closes a fan-favorite the super heavy sci-fi themed "Into the Void".
In between these classics are lesser known but equally magnificent songs
"After Forever" with its rant against the contradictions of religion. The heavy swing of "Lord of this World" and "Solitude" the musical sibling of
PARANIOD's stoney "Planet Caravan".
Along with a pair of short insturment tracks by Iommi the classical guitar inspires "Embryo" and "Orchid" this album is a stone-cold classic of the genre
and an absolute must own!
